Primary duties: The veterinary assistant is responsible for providing supportive care to any pets within the hospital. This may include: feeding, watering, walking, administering medications or fluids, restraining pet for procedures, dressing wounds or changing bandages, cleaning kennels, assisting in surgery, performing dentals, taking and processing radiographs, collecting and preparing blood/urine/fecal/ear samples, etc. Accurate documentation of services and results must be noted in the patient record.

Exam Preparation and Assistance: The veterinary assistant briefly reviews the medical record prior to speaking with the client.  All recommended or necessary services that are needed are clearly identified so they can be offered or explained to the owner. The veterinary assistant prepares vaccinations, lab samples, fecal floats or cytology samples at the beginning of the appointment. The veterinary assistant is comfortable in restraining the pet for physical exam and the administration of vaccinations or medications, and the collection of blood or lab samples.

Client Education: The veterinary assistant is comfortable explaining all recommended procedures and medical reasons for recommendations to owners. The veterinary assistant should have a broad overview and understanding on common small animal questions and concerns.
Surgery or Drop-off Admission and Monitoring: The veterinary assistant clearly explains scheduled procedures and goes through an estimate with the owner in the privacy of an exam room. The veterinary assistant prepares the patient for surgery, assesses and maintains all equipment for hospitalized procedures, and monitors the patient throughout procedure and recovery. The veterinary assistant documents all medical notes in the record and ensures everything is accurately completed prior to discharging patient from.
Treatment Area and Exam Room Maintenance: The treatment area is kept clean and tidy, and messes are cleaned up promptly. Lab equipment (Vet Test, X-ray, Autoclave, etc.) is checked regularly to ensure they are operational and receives scheduled maintenance on time. Treatment area and exam rooms are checked frequently to ensure that proper items are stocked. Supplies or medications that need to be reordered are recorded for the office manager. Exam rooms are disinfected between each appointment.
